Frequently Asked Questions

About Kammok

Where does the name “Kammok” come from?

Somewhere between dreaming outside the box, creative thinking, and too many cups of coffee, our Founder created the word “Kammok”, a tongue-tied marriage of camping + hammock. Today, Kammok is a company seeking to equip and inspire others for life changing adventure through the creation of technical, quality outdoor gear--while also doubling as a Spelling Bee Champion’s worst nightmare. K-A-M-M-O-K. ;)

What is the Kammok mission?

Simply put, we believe adventure changes lives. Everything we do, every product we create, is working towards the goal of moving others beyond the mundane, and into a life of adventure, community and love. Our technical gear serves as a launching pad to this higher purpose, stewarding you to experience fullness of life while inviting those around you into wonder, curiosity and, of-course, the adventure you find outdoors. Kammok is a member of 1% For The Planet and a Certified B Corp business.

Who started Kammok?

In 2010, Greg McEvilly founded Kammok on a fundamental belief that adventure changes lives, joining business with social impact to serve a higher purpose in the outdoor industry. Read more about our history and founding story here.

What is the purpose of ‘high-quality’ hammocks? What makes these special?

We created a hammock that outperforms any hammock in the industry.

LunarWave fabric: ripstop nylon vs. the average nylon used in most industry hammocks.

Durability: our Roo hammock holds up to 500 lbs!

Safety: climbing-rated carabiners and racer slings set an unparalleled standard for hammock safety.

Lifetime Warranty: every Kammok product is backed under our MOB Guarantee, a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects and damages within proper use.

Through our hammocks and other products, we aim to help you create a greater story for yourself, your family, and your community.

Why a kangaroo?

Our logo, the female red kangaroo, symbolizes our core values of adventure, community and love in a powerful way. The female kangaroo nurtures her young, called "joeys," in her pouch, protecting them from the harshest conditions of the Australian outback. But, she does not do it alone. Kangaroos adventure in a group of ten or more called a “MOB.” They rely on each other to meet basic needs, and they tackle the adventure of life, together.

What is a B-Corp?

What does being a member of 1% for the Planet mean?

1% for the Planet is a not-for-profit organization that connects businesses, consumers and nonprofits - empowering each of us to drive lasting, positive change. What does that look like? Great question. It means that every year, before we take any expenses, salary, overhead or material costs out of the equation, we take 1% of our revenue and donate it to our nonprofit partners. Wait, so you donate revenue...not profit? YES, and it’s awesome. We believe in our partners and the work they are doing; we are honored to give more as we grow more.

What is the Give Adventure Program? Why youth?

We believe big adventures start small, and that you must first go deep to go wide. As such, we are starting from where we are - literally in Austin, Texas - working with local partners on mission in our city who are focused on relational, direct impact (mentorship, leadership and outdoor adventure programs) and systemic change (field research, access and infrastructure, scalable education models). Our Give Adventure Program is our way of practicing what we preach, and investing in the local community with adventure and love. Youth are the future of our world, and a single child impacted for the better begins a ripple effect for all future generations. When you buy Kammok, you Give Adventure. It’s that simple. Read more here.

Where is Kammok gear made?

Our products are manufactured in Asia. While we source our component parts from several countries, the majority of our final production is in China. Our team has built a solid relationship with our production partners in China over the past six years, and we are proud to work alongside a world-class team to produce our gear. As a certified B-Corp (see details above), we ensure our that our manufacturing processes are both ethical and environmentally-conscious.

And lastly, why do you talk so much about tacos?! What’s the deal?

Maria and Armando. Texas Forever. Tacos are Tasty. The significance of tacos to Kammok is rooted far back in time, where our team’s deep love for the delicious food met an act of fate that occurred one afternoon at our HQ. Long story short - it came to our attention that our friends Maria + Armando, owners of the best taco truck in Austin, were going to have to shut down their truck due to the high cost of rent, in addition to the cost of using fresh ingredients daily. We saw an opportunity to give back to the community of East Austin, embark on an adventure with Granny’s Tacos, and fuel our love for helping others - so we pushed some dirt around in our backyard and re-opened Granny’s Tacos at the Kammok HQ. You can now find Granny’s Tacos right in our backyard, open to the public Mon-Sat from 9-4 pm. Drop by and grab a taco with us - Topo Chicos all around.

What is the difference between the Roo and Wallaby?

Find a side-by-side comparison of our two best-in-class hammocks here.

Are the Roo and Wallaby waterproof? Can I leave it out in the rain?

NO - The Roo and Wallaby are highly breathable and do not repel water. If you hang your hammock under a waterfall, the water will pass through the fabric fairly quickly. The Lunarwave fabric (used for the Roo) as well as the Gravitas fabric (used for the Wallaby) are 100% nylon and will resist mildew and it dries very quickly.

While our gear is made to withstand the outdoor elements, we do not recommend leaving any of our gear outside when not in use in order to extend useful life. Leaving gear outside in the rain when not in use may compromise the integrity of the materials and is not considered normal use (therefore voiding our lifetime warranty).

How do I wash my hammock?

Hand washing your hammock with cold water and biodegradable detergent is best for extending its useful life, but it can also be cleaned in a washing machine (front-load machines are best because they don't have an agitator and conserve water). Washing machine instructions:

Remove the carabiners prior to wash.

If the Roo is soiled or stained use a small amount of powdered detergent (preferably biodegradable). Do not use fabric softener, bleach, or stain removal products.

Wash the hammock by itself using the gentle/cold water setting.

Hang to dry - the hammock will dry quickly in warm/dry environment.

What are the gear loops for?

The six loops on the perimeter of our hammocks are there for gear attachment points (great for clipping water bottles). People also like to use them to tie their hammock out with guy lines or to enclose the hammock (like a cocoon) while they are sleeping.

Do straps come with the hammocks?

NO - the Python Straps are sold separately to allow for order customization depending on personal needs and preferences. Unless you already have straps or a hammock stand, we recommend purchasing some Python Straps to get your hammock up in the air. Versatile, adjustable, and tree-friendly, the Python Straps can safely suspend users by anchor points over 20 feet apart. Learn more here.
